Seven steep-spectrum compact radio sources with no optical counterparts to the limit of the Palomar Sky Survey have been investigated with the Very Large Array. A model is proposed for these objects in which they are assumed to be extragalactic and emit by synchrotron radiation out have abnormally weak magnetic fields. The resulting large relativistic electron density required to produce the observed flux density would result in high brightness temperatures near the turnover frequency, causing serious inverse Compton losses by the electrons observed at radio and higher frequencies. This effect could account for the observed radio spectrum and for the lack of optical identification. The possible relevance of this model to low-frequency variability is discussed.
