A photographic photometry study is undertaken for 219 stars in the previously unstudied globular cluster NGC 6638, together with 187 stars in two neighboring zones that are of equal area to that of the cluster. Giant branch members, which are difficult to distinguish because of the abundance of field stars, seem to define a steep sequence. Assuming a horizontal branch absolute magnitude of + 0.6, and an interstellar reddening of 0.40, NGC 6638 is found to be 8.7 + or - 0.5 kpc from the sun and 1.7 kpc from the galactic center.
