The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the leading project amongall current designs of future Very High-Energy (VHE) gamma-rayastronomy. Planned as an open observatory, it will cover a range offour orders of magnitude in energy, from close to 10 GeV to 100 TeV,with high sensitivity. Its preparatory phase, funded by the FP7 programwill begin in the autumn of 2010.A strong Spanish community supports the project, and there are chancesthat one of the twin proposed sites will be located in Spain. This posteroutlines the main goals and characteristics of the CTA project.
