The authors have investigated the feasibility of a BGO-CsI(Tl) phoswich, for future applications in X- and γ-ray astrophysics experiments. The aim is to conjugate the high photofraction density of BGO with the low-background properties of the phoswich. With laboratory tests on small-size prototypes the authors have checked the properties of resolution and the effectiveness of pulse shape discrimination. They also estimate the expected performance of large-area systems and the background rates in space environment.
