The design and predicted performance of the payload components for a balloon-borne phoswich hard-X-ray observatory being built at CNR-TESRE (with scheduled completion in late 1985) are reported and illustrated with diagrams, drawings, graphs, and sample correlation maps. The detector is designed to operate with 3-sigma sensitivity 2 x 10 to the -6th photons/sq cm s keV over the range 20-200 keV (assuming 10 ks observing time at 3 mbar residual atmospheric pressure) and energy resolution 17 percent at 60 keV; the telescope configuration has field of view 3 deg FWHM and angular resolution 10 arcmin. Components described include the detectors, rocking collimators, multipitch modulation collimators, inflight calibration and active-gain-control systems, front-end electronics, data-processing system, and guiding system.
