Comets: Fragmetation, Dynamics

Scientific paper

Studying cometary fragments can give information about their physical properties, and thus information about the cometary nucleus could be derived. Many observers noticed bright condensations, attributed to fragments, in the coma of comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake, in March 1996. We had developed a complete model for the dynamics of icy cometary fragments, and had obtained a perfect agreement with the observations coming from several observatories. We present an analysis of a new set of data coming from the Lowell observatory, covering a two days period not covered by the previous data set, due to poor meteorological conditions. A good agreement is found with the previous data fitting. A new version of the model has been developed, allowing the simultaneous study of the dynamics of two icy fragments. The possibility of gravitational interaction between two fragments is discussed.
