Nearly all investigators agree on the general scheme for the late stages of evolution of stars having low or intermediate masses. According to this scheme, a star ascends the asymptotic giant branch all the while losing mass via a strong stellar wind. At some point, the star enters a brief "superwind" phase, during which the planetary nebula is formed, and the remnant central star then evolves toward its final fate as a white dwarf. In this paper, the authors present new estimates of the initial mass and final mass of central stars of planetary nebulae.
