Meteor Showers: Taurids

Scientific paper

The Taurid meteor stream with its complex structure and activity forms a broad diffuse meteoroid stream with a northern and southern branch, active in autumn months in the pre-perihelion part of the stream's orbit. It is generally accepted that the stream is forming a complex consisting of several small meteor streams which is genetically associated with comet P/Encke and several Apollo asteroids. The most reliable information on the Taurid stream structure provide photographic meteor orbits 240 members of the Taurid stream are found, the mean orbit and radiant ephemeris were derived. The stream is active for almost 100° in the solar longitude and exhibits a systematic variation of the orbital elements along the activity for both the northern and southern branches. The radiant is rather compact, for each branch of approx. equal size of 15°×10°. Possible association of the stream with Apollo asteroids is discussed.
