The observational data for the beginning and end heights of meteors in the Persid, Southern Taurid and Geminid meteor streams is compared to values estimated on the basis of the qualitative theory of dustball meteor ablation developed by Hawkes and Jones (1975). The comparison showed reasonable agreement between the theoretical and observational results. On the basis of the theoretical analysis of Hopgood, Rothwell and Royrvik (1982) the amount of energy required to a unit mass of meteoroid material is calculated, with the result that meteors are possibly more fragile than is presently assumed.
