The Poynting-Robertson (P-R) effect has been applied to meteoroids for several decades. It is well known that the P-R effect produces only changes in the orbital plane of the particle. The differential equations governing the secular changes in both eccentricity and semimajor axis are known since the time of Robertson, provided the initial orbits are not near circular. A review of the secular changes in the orbital elements of particles caused by the P-R effect is given. We also consider the initial conditions that are relevant when solving the differential equations. An expression for the secular change for an advancement of perihelion is presented and its derivation is outlined. This differs from previously obtained expressions. The effects of components of the radiation pressure force that are not in the orbital plane are briefly mentioned. The paper discusses changes to the three orbital elements: inclination, longitude of perihelion, longitude of the ascending node. Changes in the longitude of the ascending node are particularly important for meteor streams. Also these changes affect the nodal distance. Some applications to specific meteor streams are mentioned.
