The photographic observation of comets is an increasingly important activity for amateurs, and covers four main types of work: discovery, confirmation of discoveries, and recovery of periodic comets; astrometry - the determination of precise positions; the recording of structural features and angular dimensions; and the determination of photographic magnitudes. A further form of photographic work is spectrography, a more specialized discipline that will be dealt with in a later paper.
