It is suggested that the superhumps in SU UMa stars are generated by a bright region on the red component that rotates asynchronously with the binary period. The bright region would be produced by mass-transfer instability by the red component. A simple experimental illustration of dynamical instability is presented, together with estimates of cooling times after instability.
