A preliminary geological-morphological analysis of radar images of the surface of Venus is presented. The analysis permitted the subdivision of geologic formations into the following groups: volcanic, volcanic-tectonic, and impacted. It is shown that volcanic plains of low and average hypsometric levels, and the high plateau Lakshimi were formed mainly by extensive basalt effusions, with the possible contribution of pyroclastic and aeolian sediments. Volcanic and tectonic features were found in the arched uplifts of the Beta Regio and Bell Regio, and in many ovoidal features of 150-600 km diameter which resembled the ovoidal structures of the Early Precambrian era on earth. The impact craters on Venus resembled the impact craters of other planets. On the basis of crater density measurements, the age of formation of the volcanic plains is estimated to be from 0.5 to 1 billion years. No high-crater-density areas were identified with ages corresponding to periods of heavy bombardment.
