The behavior of TiO and CN bands in stellar spectra is reviewed. Both molecules have extensive, overlapping band systems throughout the optical and near infrared spectral regions. They provide different information in oxygen-rich stars, TiO being sensitive to temperature and CN to luminosity. The optimum placement of filters for the two-dimensional (TiO/CN) classification of K and M stars is discussed. A simple index defined by a pair of interference filters will suffice for the recognition of C stars and M stars, and many Local Group galaxies have been surveyed in this manner.
