We study reconstruction of the mass distribution in galaxies and clusters of galaxies using gravitationally lensed images. A semi-parametric mass model, the Spatial Mixed effects model (SMEM), is proposed for the reconstruction. We use the restricted maximum likelihood method (REML) to estimate the parameters from the positions of the lens images, and reconstruct the mass distribution non-parametrically using the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP). The uncertainty in the reconstructed mass map can be computed as well. This methodology is applied to SDSS J1004.
