A nova search of the LMC revealed that on 6 June, 2001, the 13th magnitude star V2434 or a star in close proximity to it erupted to magnitude 9.7. Twenty-four hours later it was near ``normal''. Possible explanations for this event include an unusual symbiotic star, a giant flare and a super-fast nova. For reasons to be given, we prefer the last explanations.
