The opportunities for ballistic missions to long-period comets are discussed. The possible transfer orbits of zero inclination are mapped as a function of the heliocentric distance of the comet's node, the minimum geocentric hyperbolic excess speed of launching, and the minimum flight time required. The orbital data are supplemented by those on ground-based sighting conditions at the moment of flyby. The results make it possible to define the technical requirements - the discovery lead time and launching energy - for a given relative frequency of mission opportunities.
