Over an associative ring we consider a class $\mathbb{X}$ of left modules
which is closed under set-indexed coproducts and direct summands. We
investigate when the triangulated homotopy category $\mathsf{K}(\mathbb{X})$ is
compactly generated, and give a number of examples.
