Invited Review at the meeting ``Resolved Stellar Populations'', held in Cancun, Mexico, 18-22 April 2005

Scientific paper

In this review I will discuss recent developments on the topic of resolved Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and Long Period Variables (LPVs) in our Galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds, and the Local Group in general. Since the main characteristics of AGB stars are (1) their infrared, (2) pulsational and (3) chemical properties, it is fitting that I will focus on recent results from the (a) 2MASS/DENIS and MSX near- and mid-IR surveys, the (b) micro-lensing surveys and (c) dedicated narrow-band imaging surveys.
