With the launch of ESA's INTEGRAL satellite in october 2002, a gamma-ray observatory will be placed in orbit providing a multiwavelength coverage from a few keV up to 10 MeV for the study of high energy phenomena in the universe. Among the major scientific objectives of INTEGRAL are the study of compact objects, and in particular of microquasars, stellar nucleosynthesis, high energy transients, particle acceleration and interaction processes, and galactic diffuse emission. In this review I will expose the science prospects of INTEGRAL in the above mentioned fields.
