We prove the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture for cocompact Fuchsian
groups, thereby giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed spin
manifold of dimension greater than four with fundamental group cocompact
Fuchsian to admit a metric of positive scalar curvature.
