Artificial black holes, such as sonic holes in Bose-Einstein condensates, may
give insights into the role of the physics at the event horizon beyond the
Planck scale. We show that sonic white holes give rise to a discrete spectrum
of instabilities that is insensitive to the analogue of trans-Planckian physics
for Bose-Einstein condensates.
