A possible interpretation of the large redshifts of quasars is suggested in terms of a generalized Doppler effect. A method based on the Lie isotropic lifting of special relativity is proposed. The generalized Doppler effect obtained within Santilli's Lie isotropic relativity is reviewed. The inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the medium inside quasars is represented by a deformation of the space-time metric, which, in the simplest case, depends on a single parameter b. A generalized expression of the redshift for light propagation in such a medium is obtained. The procedure allows the numerical estimate of b for some quasars associated to galaxies. Some cosmological implications of Santilli's relativity are summarized.
