Electron density profiles observed via radio occultation from a number of Venera probes are compared with direct measurements carried out with the Pioneer-Venus Orbiter (PVO). A systematic difference between electron density profiles obtained during different years is found, which is explained by variations of interaction conditions between the solar wind and the upper ionosphere. Data on the solar wind and ionospheric pressure for periods of low and high solar activity are analyzed. A gasdynamic model of solar wind/ionosphere interaction is proposed to explain differences in ionopause position as observed from the Venera probes and the PVO.
