A study of the expansion velocities of the Mira and OH/IR stars is used to substantiate the hypothesis that circumstellar shells exhibit color evolution under a secularly increasing mass-loss rate in the IR two-color diagram. The correlations found between the stellar properties of Miras and their expansion velocities are then used to propose a model of the mass-loss regime governing late type stars. Comparisons between carbon- and oxygen-rich stars show that C stars form dust at hotter temperatures and, in consequence, the circumstellar shells of C stars in the solar neighborhood become opaque at a bluer IR color than M stars. Carbon dust has a markedly larger terminal velocity than dust from M stars of comparable mass; the ratio of condensation temperatures Tc(C) to Tc(M) is estimated at 1.7, and the ratio of radii for dust formation is estimated at 0.25.
