We report new sub-arcsec observations of the η Carinae nebula taken with the coronograph of the STScI. The outer shell and the inner dense nebula, called the Homunculus, have been resolved by subtracting a varying background from the original images in the light of [N II] 6583 Å and through a V filter chosen in order that no major emission lines are in the passband. Comparison of the structure of the Homunculus with published infrared maps after image-restoration shows a very similar overall bipolar shape. A BVRI and Hβ, [O III] 5007 Å, Hα and [N II] 6583 Å photometry has also been carried out. The mean colors-of the knots belonging_to the Homunculus_appear to be rather homogeneous around B-V = 0.09 and R-I = 0.15. The West and the South condensations have very high [N II] 6583/Hα ratio, in accord with the X-ray emission, suggesting that these features are shock ionized. The entire outer shell shows high n(N+)/n(H+) and low n(O2+)/n(H+) confirming most of the CNO is nitrogen.
