The increasing number of observations of OH microwave transitions from high energy levels and new computations of collisional rates with H2 make the time ripe for a new attack on the problem of OH statistical equilibrium. Overlaps of the far-infrared line profiles are known to be important for a full understanding of the OH maser pumping mechanism. A model that takes into account both local (thermal) and nonlocal overlap in a spherical masering cloud. An extension of the Sobolev large velocity gradient approximation is proposed to include the effect of nonlocal overlap and internal dust. The numerical results are discussed and compared with all the observed microwave transitions (up to 512 K) in W3(OH). It is concluded that a suitable combination of a far-infrared radiation field and overlap can qualitatively reproduce almost all the features observed in this region.
