We have initiated a program to identify variable stars in Galactic open clusters. In the fall/winter of 2009, imaging photometry has been acquired, mainly in the R band, for 8 open clusters using the 81-cm Tenagra telescope in Arizona. Here we report on the preliminary results in NGC 7039, a moderately young cluster (66 Myr) at a distance of 0.95 kpc. From 25 September 2009 to 4 November 2009, more than 30 candidate variable stars have been found and classified --- based on the amplitude and period determined from the light curves --- with variability timescales ranging from hours to weeks.
