The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has produced a wealth of information on solar system objects. While most solar system studies using SDSS data have focused on the asteroids (see, for example, poster 45.06), one comet (C/1999 F2 Dalcanton) has been discovered via visual inspection of SDSS images. Here I report the preliminary results of an automated search for comets in SDSS data. In addition to the independent detection of Comet Dalcanton, seven more comets have been found: six of them previously known and recognized as comets, and one discovery of cometary activity in an unusual outer-planet-crossing asteroid. I will discuss the prospects for further comet discoveries as the automated search is extended to fainter magnitudes and over a larger area of the sky.
