The possible detection of re-ionization on SDSS quasar spectra opens up the hunt for the UV sources responsible for re-ionization. Based on the minimum luminosity needed for ionizing all hydrogen, I will describe the density-luminosity parameter space occupied by these sources with a model independent approach. I will also consider a number of plausible models, with realistic UV photons escape fractions and enhanced recombination rates due to clumping. While only the James Webb Space Telescope is able to probe all of the available parameter space and therefore is needed to characterize these sources, it is possible that a detection will be made before JWST is launched. To this end I will describe search strategies for probing the available parameter space by using ground based facilities and the Hubble Space Telescope.
