The DEEP 2 Galaxy Redshift Survey will observe ~ 60,000 very faint objects using slitlets as short as 3 arcsec on the DEIMOS spectrograph at Keck II. To extract useful spectra from these observations, new, sophisticated sky subtraction techniques are required. Indeed, for very short slitlets it can be preferable to perform sky subtraction using a template sky spectrum obtained on another slitlet and modified to account for differences in point spread function. In this talk, we present the techniques that allow us to achieve Poisson-limited sky subtraction for longer (> ~ 5 arcsec) slits in DEIMOS data. We also present the new algorithms that permit near-Poisson sky subtraction even for slitlets too short to provide robust measures of the sky spectrum on their own. Thanks to these methods, we can observe ~ 120-130 galaxies at once on a single 5 arcminute by 16 arcminute DEIMOS slitmask.
