The Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe 2 (DEEP2) survey will obtain high-resolution spectra of approximately 60,000 galaxies at z ~ 1 using the new DEIMOS spectrograph at the Keck Observatory. This 3 year project began in July, 2002; in our first four months of operation, we have acquired spectra of ~ 7000 objects with redshift 0.7 < z 1.5. This talk will provide details of our observational techniques and data reduction methods. Time permitting, we will also present measurements of redshifts, linewidths, and rotation velocities from data obtained in our first observing season. This work is being supported by funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
