The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) was installed onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in May, 2009 as part of the Servicing Mission (SM4). COS is optimized for observing faint point sources at moderate spectral resolutions and is the most sensitive UV (from about 90 to 320 nm) spectrograph, with peak effective area of 3000 cm2, ever flown on HST. As part of the overall HST Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV), COS on-orbit functionality was verified via an extensive study, while Cycle 17 calibration activities have deepened our understanding of the instrument's characteristics. Science-related calibrations and verifications are being performed as a part of the routine calibrations including flux calibration, flat field characterization, spectroscopic performance instrument monitoring, and high S/N operation. A comprehensive review of interesting characteristics such as the on-orbit line spread function, time dependent sensitivity changes in the NUV and FUV gratings, non-uniformities in the cross delay line (XDL) fixed pattern noise, and target acquisitions through a tiny field-stop are discussed. Analysis indicates that high quality spectra are routinely achieved and that a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 per pixel is achievable.
