The QSO MR 2251-178 was recently observed with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating instrument at a luminosity of approximately 2.7 1044 erg sec-1 (using H0 = 65). MR 2251-178 was among the first quasars to be identified as an X-ray source, and was the first AGN for which an ionized absorption model was proposed (Halpern, 1984). We discuss whether the observed absorption is attributable to an ionized absorber or to cold absorption. Additionally, we test for the presence of emission and absorption lines and identify probable lines observed in the high energy spectrum. We also present an image analysis of the zero-order image in order to analyze gas in the surrounding cluster. This work is supported by NASA grant NAS8-01129.
