In situ measurements of ion charge states can provide a unique insight into the heating and evolution of coronal mass ejection when tested against realistic non-equilibrium ionization modeling. In this work we investigate the representation of the CME magnetic field as a spheromak configuration, where the plasma heating is prescribed by the choice of anomalous resistivity and the spheromak expansion. We find a good account of the filament heating in the 19 May 2007 CME up to temperatures around 106K both from STEREO EUVI observations on the disk and in-situ. However charge states as high as Fe16+, as observed by ACE and STEREO, are difficult to reproduce by this heating, for any value of the anomalous resistivity (reasonable or unreasonable), and so some other process (e.g. reconnection) is likely to be at work.
