Full-disk coronal images from the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on Yohkoh show an apparent abrupt turn on of solar cycle 23 in mid-1997, with a rapid, statistically significant increase in emission within two or three solar rotations. We examine the SXT data before, during, and after this step-function turn on period, and compare the behavior with that found in full-disk photospheric magnetogram and intensity images from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory in the same period, in order to gain insight into the physical causes of this sudden onset. This work is supported by NASA contracts NAG5-10483 (MDI) and NAS8-00119 (SXT
