The SDO/HMI will measure the transverse components as well as the line-of-sight component of the full-disk solar magnetic field with high temporal and spatial resolution. The data will be new essential inputs to enhance the models of the solar surface, solar corona, and solar wind: For the models of the solar corona, the seamless high-temporal/spatial observations of the three-component magnetic field measurements help us to better determine the flux of the free-energy associated with the magnetic field variations and the plasma motions. Such boundary data, for example, will be used by various sophisticated models to numerically drive the active-region system and reproduce the transient phenomena such as the solar flares.
As for the models of the global solar corona, the input data must include the regions away from the sunspot active regions. However, the strength of the horizontal field in the quiet sun will be of order of the HMI sensitivity limit. Because the polarization angle in the quiet sun will be of reasonable accuracy, it would be a good choice to examine the polarization angle of the transverse field, in a preparation of the new input for the global models.
In this presentation, we will show these magnetic field properties at the quiet sun measured by the HMI measurement.
