The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (SDSS-III/APOGEE) is a large-scale spectroscopic survey of Galactic stars. The SDSS-III/APOGEE survey is designed to produce high-S/N, R = 27,500-31,000 spectra that cover a wavelength range of 1.51 to 1.68 microns for of order 100,000 stars. APOGEE will be the deepest chemical survey of the Galactic disk and bulge and most (of order 80,000 stars) will come from these stellar populations. This unique data set, with excellent kinematics (error <= 0.5 km/s) and abundances (errors <= 0.1 dex), will provide extensive constraints on galaxy formation/evolution models and provide insights into the physical processes of star formation, chemical feedback, mixing in the formation of the Galaxy. Additionally, APOGEE will survey the chemodynamics of the bulge, which will enhance and compliment existing bulge surveys (e.g., BRAVA).
