The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) was installed in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during its fourth Servicing Mission (SM4). It obtains spectra in both the near UV (NUV) and far UV (FUV). In the NUV, it records medium resolution (R ≈ 20000) spectra from 1700-3200A, and low resolution (R ≈ 2000) spectra from 1700-3200A. In the FUV, it records medium resolution (R ≈ 20000) spectra over the range 1150 - 1800A, and low resolution (R ≈ 3000) from 900 ˜ 2200A. COS is one of the most sensitive UV spectrographs ever flown. As part of the Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV), we have performed initial on-orbit measurements of the spectroscopic sensitivities of its different observing modes. We present these results and compare them to pre-launch expectations and other HST instruments. We also describe future plans to monitor the sensitivities.
