Mercury: Satellites, Venus: Satellites

Scientific paper

It is often suggested that the reason the planet Mercury does not possess a natural satellite is due to tidal disruption of any possible satellite orbit caused by the close proximity of the planet to the Sun. In this article it is shown that there is a stable zone some 300,000 km wide around Mercury in which any satellite orbit would be completely free from disruption by solar tides. The most probable explanation for the absence of satellites of Mercury, and of the planet Venus, is discussed.
