The nature of sunspot activity on the sun is reviewed. The sun is
examined as a typical star and the discovery of sunspots and of the
11-year sunspot cycle is retold. The magnetism of sunspots and the
conditions that give rise to sunspots are discussed. The significance of
a possible record sunspot maximum is addressed.
