An algorithm for the estimation of the uncertainty in the period of a variable star is presented. The algorithm may be used for periods determined by the Lafler-Kinman (1965) technique, Deeming's (1975) discrete Fourier transform method, or improvements on either of these methods. The algorithm is that developed by Kwee and van Woerden (1956) for the estimation of the uncertainty in the time of minimum of an eclipsing binary determined by Hertzsprung's (1928) method.
