The nature of the physical process underlying extragalactic OH megamaser emission is investigated. It is found that low-gain amplification of the radio continuum is certainly occurring in front of the nucleus of IC4553 and probably also in two other sources. It is also found that the 18 cm main-line excitation temperature do not differ by more than a factor of about two within a single source, and the main-line optical depths are close to the LTE ratio.
