It is shown that the absorption feature observed in the spectrum of giant elliptical galaxies at about 8200 A is due not only to the Na I near infrared doublet, but also to a blend of metallic lines (Fe I, V I, Zr I, Mg I) and to weak TiO bands at about 8200 A. The identification of this feature with the Na I doublet has led to the conclusion that the spectra of elliptical galaxies contain a significant late M dwarf contribution, in contradiction with the observation of the Wing-Ford band, the CO band at 2.3 microns, and the near-infrared Ca II triplet, which all point to a giant-dominated light. This apparent difficulty is now resolved.
