The results of Stroemgren photometry measurements on 64 red supergiants in the SMC were used to estimate the metallicity of these stars. To this purpose, a metallicity calibration was performed by measuring Stroemgren colors for red giants in galactic globular clusters, demonstrating that Stroemgren photometry could accurately rank globular clusters according to their metallicity. It was found that the average estimated metallicity of SMC supergiants is very low, compared to the galactic globular cluster giants. This can be qualitatively explained by a higher N/Fe ratio of the globular cluster stars. The scatter of Stroemgren colors among the SMC giants was surprisingly large.
