An observational study of the 3.1 micron H2O-ice and 4.67 micron solid CO absorption features in the Serpens cloud is presented. Near-infrared spectra have been taken in the line of sight of five sources including both Serpens embedded objects and background stars. In all cases the H2O-ice feature is detected, which confirms that the ice carriers are widespread in the Serpens intracloud medium. The results suggest a relation between the 3.07 micron optical depth and the optical extinction. Formal fits to the ice absorptions seem to indicate that the Serpens icy mantles are in some aspects different from those in the Taurus cloud. A deep 4.67 micron solid CO absorption is found toward Serpens SVS 20, a PMS double object. An analysis of this feature suggests the existence in Serpens of mantle grains not dominated by H2O-ices.
