Some of the geophysical factors perturbing the earth's rotation from what it would be if rigid-body rotation theory was valid are discussed. Attention is given to zonal winds and their correlation with annual and semi-annual changes in the length of day, changes in the astronomical biennial term, and higher-frequency variations in the length of day. It is noted that an area where satellite observations can make an important contribution to studies of the earth's rotation concerns the separation of the secular tidal and non-tidal changes in length of day by studying the tidal perturbations in satellite orbits
