A model of the global mean concentration distribution of components of the atmosphere of Mars from the surface of the planet up to an altitude of 250 km is presented. The model is based on data reported in the literature on temperature distribution, rates of chemical and photochemical reactions, and variation of the eddy viscosity coefficient with altitude. Predicted concentrations of atmospheric components are in good agreement with available measured concentrations. Possible changes in the composition of the Mars atmosphere as the result of hypothetical long-term variations in temperature, moisture, and turbulent mixing are studied. The roles of different catalytic processes are investigated, with particular attention to the part played by excited atomic oxygen.
