The 1667- and 1665-MHz OH lines have been observed in periodic comet d'Arrest between the pre-perihelion dates of June 14 and July 31, 1976. An average of the data between July 20 and 31 reveals an absorption feature at 1667 MHz and an emission feature at 1665 MHz, at intensities of about 0.12 Jy. This is the first detection of radio OH in a short-period comet. The data show that simple ultraviolet OH pump models are inadequate and that the details of hyperfine splitting and the solar Fraunhofer spectrum must be considered in order to account for the observed cometary spectra.
