The gravitational collapse of a uniform nonmagnetic nonrotating spherically symmetric interstellar gas cloud is studied, taking into account the conversion of atomic to molecular hydrogen and appropriate heating and cooling mechanisms. It is shown that this conversion can result in the collapse of an initially stable gas cloud and that in clouds with masses greater than the Jeans mass, the main effect of molecule formation is to alter the temperature distribution inside the clouds.
